MHBA 2023 Nominees

Project of the Year Nominees

  • Catalyst Support

Local Surrey mental health and wellbeing charity, Catalyst teamed up with Surrey County Council to help spread hope and awareness across the county.

Hope can mean something different for everyone, whether it be going for walks, shopping trips, or crocheting - these are all activities that Catalyst have offered to people in Surrey over the past few months. Their latest adventure as part of The HOPE Project involved members of the public and social media.

Butterflies for HOPE Project

Catalyst clients crocheted 300 little butterflies at their wellbeing drop-ins and from home, the butterflies were then distributed within the local community for members of the public to find. The special thing about these butterflies is that on the back of each one there is a QR code. If you find a butterfly, scan the QR code and you will be taken to a page on Catalyst’s website where an anonymous message of hope can be written for people in our community or for a loved one of your choice.  If you want to leave your message for hope from wherever in the world you are please do by visiting the website at https://www.catalystsupport.org.uk/butterflies-for-hope/, if you are in the Surrey area and happen to find one of the butterflies please take a photograph and use the hashtag #butterflies4hopesurrey to link it to a social media page Catalyst has created in order to keep the positive vibes spreading infinitely.

This project  as a collective aimed to provide a variety of workshops and activities that will have a positive impact on emotional and mental wellbeing, embedding mental health promotion and building communities and connectedness.

HOPE stands for:

    •    Honouring

    •    Opportunity and

    •    Possibility for Everyone

  • Katja, Sorry My Mental Illness Isn't Sexy Enough For You

Sorry My Mental Illness Isn't Sexy Enough For You was founded by Katja Pavlovna, a teacher with Schizotypal Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, back in 2021 with her friend Kay who also struggles with severe mental illness. The project was founded to give a voice to those dealing the most stigmatised and misunderstood mental illnesses that the media don't like to talk about- the 'unsexy' ones that have a real image problem. Whilst we often hear about the most extreme or sensationalised examples of these disorders, what we don't hear so much about is the perspective from those who manage their mental illnesses day to day, often with very little in the way of support. The project shares lived experiences from those with personality disorders, psychotic conditions and dissociative disorders, amongst others, in a bid to demonstrate the realities of these conditions and help people understand what life is like for us.

  • Steve -Steve's Big Bipolar Challenge

I have had a diagnosis of Bipolar for nearly 20 years, and, as I had found a long period of stability, I wanted to do something unique to help raise awareness of the condition and raise funds to help people living with bipolar or feeling its effects. I didn't want to sky dive or run a marathon, I wanted something eye catching and something I could sustain over a period to post statistics and facts. I came up with the idea of meeting celebrities for a selfie and using their profile to help spread my message and then having them sign an autograph book which I would sell. All proceeds went to Bipolar UK.

Plot twist - just after I had begun and had a few big names lined up to meet, we were struck by covid. So, in the end, my campaign took over 3 years to complete.

Eventually, I was able to meet with Hollywood A Listers, sporting legends, arena filling comedians, cult TV stars, pop stars, radio presenters and national treasures. Everyone was helpful and very kind, and my campaign on Instagram and via my personal Facebook page raised in excess of £2,600 for Bipolar UK.

I am now planning a follow up. In 2024 I will be walking non-stop from Wembley Stadium to Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Chelsea, Fulham, Brentford and back to Wembley, this time for the suicide prevention charity Batonofhopeuk.org

On each leg of my walk I hope to be joined by a famous person and our conversations will be recorded and later edited into a series of podcasts. To have a nomination for a Mental Health Blog Award would be phenomenal and a massive help when it comes to organising my next campaign. Fingers Crossed. And thank you.

  • Steve - Two Beats Apart

After losing everything and having to start again, I realised the only thing that matters is to try and help others and show the reality of a life envied by many.

  • Stu - The Noisy Brain

Thanks to all those community members and musicians who are playing their part in growing this idea.

The Noisy Brain encourages people to write about their mental and emotional health issues/experiences and with the talent of musicians all around the world we are turning those writings into songs to help raise awareness and help towards ending the stigma surrounding mental and emotional health issues.

Writing stuff down is an amazing release and creative outlet. You don’t need to be a poet or musician.

We’re certainly not! Writing is a powerful way to let stuff out and open conversation up.

There are only positives - from feeling less alone to inspiring others to do the same.

In collaboration, we are helping to break the stigma of mental health.

It’s not just a normalisation of the topic through discussion, it’s a celebration of human experiences.

Or, as we say - The Noisy Brain. Creating a more forgiving world, One lyric & One song at a time.

There’s a long way to go and lots to do to be helping people, but it’s an exciting start. Please join the community and share The Noisy Brain idea with others who may be interested.

Raising awareness of Mental Health and our experiences offers both reassurance and inspiration to listeners, which is why we are so passionate about sharing the benefits of self development for a better Mental Health. Some of the content we share does come with 'TRIGGER WARNINGS' and maybe too real for some but hey, it is someones reality?! It is in those stories that we are able to build connections and offer support in our community.

  • Hazel - Reality Tourists

I am passionate about amplifying the voices of others, challenging stigma, and humanising mental illness, especially psychosis and SMI but also eating disorders and self harm among other topics. I do a lot of work both on and off-line to this aim, and hope that one day we will live in a world where we don't feel the need to hide or feel ashamed of such a large part of ourselves

  • Keith - The Endless Spiral

Hi, I’m Keith and I am the creator and founder of The Endless Spiral. From my early teen’s I have lived with several mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia. In 2018 I was eventually diagnosed with having Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GDA). In 2020 I was diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Since then I have been on a mission to share my story and hopefully inspire others to share their experiences of mental health.

I created The Endless Spiral after I began sharing my story and realised so many people also wanted to share their stories and experiences with mental health.

The name ‘TheEndless Spiral’ came from always feeling I was caught in an endless spiral of anxiety and depression. My passion is to help people share their stories but also erase the stigma surrounding mental health.

  • Mindset By Dave

Dave takes his lived experience of bipolar disorder, depression, social anxiety and an eating disorder and combines it with coaching skills to educate people in mental health, mindset and personal development.

  • Stuart - The OCD Stories podcast

At The OCD Stories we aim to provide good, reliable and heartfelt information that lights a path in the darkness, and offers solutions.

It takes people many years to get treatment for OCD after the first experience of symptoms, including 20 years for myself. In the meantime symptoms often get worse, and the person’s quality of life suffers. All while being in the dark about what is going on. This is made worse by society having an inaccurate view of what OCD actually is. We aim to bring more awareness and understanding of OCD through the weekly podcast, for people who are suffering from it but also for those family members and friends, and other people like therapists and researchers who work in this area everyday.

If you are thinking of voting for The OCD Stories and the hard work put in over the last 7 years, 6 million downloads and 400 episodes than thank you for your support and for listening. It’s appreciated.

Vlogger of the Year

  • Ann Gath

In 2017 I was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease. In 2021, my kidneys failed.  During those times, I've blogged my challenges and how I've over come them. I shared what life was like living on dialysis with a large family and as a single parent. I made a Facebook appeal in September 2021, after dialysis became so hard that i had to put the last year of my nursing degree on hold, to find a living donor. On 1st December I received a kidney transplant from an altruistic donor who was a total stranger.

Since this time we have become friends with Nicola my donor and work together to raise awareness of living donation both on facebook and in the local and national media.

I started back at university in June, just 6 months after my surgery. Life post transplant is still challenging due to the side effect of medication  but my.life is back on track thanks to my hero. I can laugh and smile again.

I am told that my facebook blog has inspired people to go back to university, has given them hope throughout illness and has even lead to people putting themselves forward as a living donor, express their wishes and to donate blood and plasma.

I want to show my 5 children that if they have this illness they can still live a fulfilling and happy life. Their is always hope! Kind people do help!! I am told that I am inspirational, I feel I'm just doing my best to be a mum and provide for my children despite a chronic illness.

  • Dr Ally Jaffee

I hope to use my past pain and for my mess to become my message in helping and serving individuals and communities to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

Vishen Lakhiani wisely stated: “Your past pain is often the breadcrumbs that will lead you to the meaning, values and purpose of your life.” This is certainly the case for me.

I am a junior doctor with lived experience of depression. I see my vulnerability as strength. I have experienced self-growth and development from times of pain and discomfort. By sharing my story, I hope to educate, challenge biases and inspire others, especially working in healthcare to feel less shame around their mental health struggles and seek help and support. It is ok not to be ok, you are not the only one.

  • Joshua - ReallyJayBee

I always felt alone in my struggles as a man dealing with mental health issues, because there was no representation of people "like me". This would be the ultimate validation, showing that even for one person out there, I've helped change that. It truly would mean the world :')

  • Kelly - Beauty with Boo

I have always been told that I am ‘capable’ and that means that others don’t need to worry about me as much. I want to show the world that being capable doesn’t mean you need to always be strong. You’re allowed to have feelings and overwhelming emotions. There is no shame in it.

  • Leah - wellnessmedic

Mental Health was something I neglected for many years. It wasnt until March 2021, when I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, that I knew things needed to change. To do this I had to take a year out of medical school to focus on my mental health. Since returning and looking back at the last two years I realise how far I've come, but also, the need for more awareness and humanising of mental health prioritising. As a medical student who will be working as a doctor in a years time I've realised how your mental health really is the most important thing in your life, and since the time I realised this I've been advocating for mental health awareness, being raw about my own mental health journey, and ultimately on a mission to help even just 1 person, know that they are valued, worthy and not alone.

  • Lorna  - Lorn Lifts

I've experienced and dealt with depression and anxiety for most of my life - the latter I am still experiencing. I want people to know they aren't alone, and through community, we can support each other.

  • Saffron - This Is Saffers

In the last 6 months I opened up further on my socials about my mental health, and choosing to ask my doctors for medication to help. I didn’t think my posts would be relevant as I thought I was quite behind the times on medication for mental health, but I’ve had so many conversations with friends and new online friends which has not only been helpful for me, but hopefully for them too. I started my mental health journey in 2015 and I’m still learning and adapting to what makes me feel better and cope in a day to day basis. The reason I started blogging was because it helped my mental health, and in the hopes that even if me talking about my experience helps just one person, then it’s worth sharing that part of my life.

  • Sheila - Sheila Naughton

I was diagnosed with anorexia in 2017 after years of struggling with disordered eating, and poor body image, and I had no idea that what I had been experiencing was an eating disorder. I went through two inpatient stays, outpatient care for months, lost my job, social life, and even my ability to walk up the stairs. I was faced with negative experiences while in treatment due to medical professionals and decided that I would set up an instagram page to try and raise some awareness about what I was going through so hopefully someone else would identify with it, the patterns, the behaviours and feelings and not end up on death's door like me. I was told I shouldnt be writing about it by consultants but I knew I was doing the right thing. I have continued to do this for the last 5 years, speaking honestly and openly about the highs and lows, talking about the parts that noone tells you, speaking on national media platforms, speaking to schools, offering support online and all voluntarily so that I can hopefully help people.

I am still in recovery - but I have managed to get the job of my dreams, and start competing in strongwoman comps recently becoming Irelands Strongest Woman 2023. I have worked so hard to get here and still have a way to go and I use my social media - especially my insta to tell those who want to hear about what to look out for and how to stay on the road to recovery. I am responsible with my posting and avoiding triggering content such as before and afters or any 'tips' on behaviours.

I would love to be considered as I have worked so hard over the last 5 years.

  • Steph - DIVAMUM

I’m really proud of the community I’ve created and the response I get from people.

  • The Morning Coffee Run

My blogging and social media is all about the incredible power running can have on your mental health and every other part of your life too.

Blogger of the Year

  • Adam - The Anxiety Philosopher

Some key facts about me –

- In February 2019, I was diagnosed by my GP as having anxiety (along with stress and low mood)

- I love philosophical thinking!!!!

The Anxiety Philosopher Blogs ARE NOT philosophical blogs about anxiety. The Anxiety Philosopher Blogs ARE philosophical thoughts from someone living with anxiety.

Each blog is a combination of two things. The first part of each blog is a motivational quote that is rooted in a philosophical topic…life, love, success, purpose etc. The second part of each blog is simply the thoughts that I have had based on the motivational quote.

The Anxiety Philosopher Blogs aim to provide blogs that are accessible, thought provoking, and inspiring. The blogs are just my thoughts – nothing more, nothing less. I am not a therapist; I am not a counsellor. I’m just someone living with anxiety, putting his philosophical musings down into words, hoping that someone…somewhere…can take something positive from what I’m writing.

  • Sophie Mei Lan - Mama Mei

Sophie Mei Lan started vlogging eight years ago during an episode of severe anxiety and psychosis. She began making candid vlogs to help herself and others. One of her raw vlogs on anxiety reached two billion people worldwide, leading to a 300 per cent rise in referrals to an anxiety helpline.

This spurred her on to making documentaries for BBC on mental health and create a vlog and blog called Mama Mei talking all things mental health and wellbeing as well as celebrating alternative family life and parenting.

Sophie has since set up a social enterprise to support people with their mental health and wellbeing and is a regular spokesperson and newspaper columnist candidly talking about issues.

It is raw, the real deep core of my being is expressed in my blog and I hope to inspire others to connect with the parts of themselves they don’t always like. Each of us has mental health and it won’t always be easy to recover, what my blog aims to do is to help you feel validated and live through the struggles.
